Maia Mitchell Returns for a Second Season of "The Fosters"

The Fosters Season 2

Cast Member Maia Mitchell Gives Us The Scoop on Life as a "Foster!"

By Danae Samms

You might recognize Maia Mitchell from ABC Family's show "The Fosters." Maia plays Callie Jacob, who has come to live with Stef and Lena Foster and their family. Things began to heat up at the end of season one as Callie tried to get her birth father to sign away parental rights. Season two of the show starts Monday, June 16, at 9:00pm ET.

With a popular show like "The Fosters," a lot of exciting things can happen. Maia explained her favorite part of working on the show, "For me it's been the people I have gotten to work with. I've been watching the storylines take my character in all these different places and I've met a bunch of people. I have loved working with the family and I've loved working with Rosie O'Donnell. I'm getting to work with her and Robert Quinn. I love the episodes shot in the house with the family. That's when you can see them and how they're connecting and how they're going to bridge those gaps."

Being the ground-breaking show that it is, "The Fosters" has made a personal impact on a lot of fans. Sometimes, they even get the opportunity to tell Maia about how much the show means to them. "My favorite is always when I meet them. The show means something when they are foster kids or they're adopted. Sometimes their stories haven't been told. To me, that is always the best. When people are like, 'what you're doing has meant something to me, and it has made a difference in my life.' That to me is really amazing."

With season two less than a week away, fans are eager to know what is coming. While she couldn't give away too much, Maia let us know some of what is coming. "You see the characters really learning a lot about their past as far as what the audience is aware of and what the characters are aware of. You discover things about the characters along with them. Callie is exploring if she wants to get to know Robert Quinn who is her birth father and what adoption means for her. She's discovering if she needs that piece of paper and if she needs his permission."

Interestingly enough, Maia is actually from Australia. While often actors have to work hard at an accent, Maia told us about how easily an American accent comes to her. "It was hard at the beginning of season one, but now I have learned to be in an American accent all day. So now I'll just go to work and something clicks and I'm just in an American accent. That helps. I have a dialect coach and all the co-directors we work with are really good about keeping me American."

Be sure to catch Maia Mitchell in the season two premiere of "The Fosters" this Monday, June 16, 9:00ET on ABC Family.
