Brandon T. Jackson Talks Making a Sequel, Working With Special Effects and Playing "Grover" in a Popular Franchise!

Brandon T. Jackson was getting ready to head home to his native Detroit for the holidays when he took some time out of a hectic schedule to give us a call. The actor who has appeared in films like "Tropic Thunder," "Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son" and "Tooth Fairy" was more than happy to talk about reprising his role as "Grover" in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

"Well, the second film is about Percy Jackson and everybody, Alexandra Daddario's 'Annabeth,' my character 'Grover,' and 'Clarisse' played by Leven Rambin, we have to go and find the Golden Fleece to save Thalia Grace, who is Zeus' daughter," Brandon explains when asked what the sequel is about. "Zeus' daughter, her life was to protect the camp; she turned into a tree to protect against the Cyclops that come in. What happened was... the tree is dying so we have to find the Golden Fleece to save the camp."

Fans of the books and the first movie (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief) will enjoy seeing all of their favorite characters on a new adventure full of twists and turns. Brandon was also excited about stepping back into the shoes of his character "Grover."

"Grover is a good-hearted, funny character," Brandon explains when asked to describe his character. "[He] loves making jokes, loves quests. Well, in this one, he doesn't feel like going on the quest but he loves adventure. He loves and protects Percy Jackson. His best friend is Percy."

As an actor, Brandon didn't do much research before showing up to play this role. He says that most of it just came naturally, thanks to a good script. "You know what's crazy? It was like, 'Grover,' to me, when I read, it was just something that I really wanted to do, because it was so different. Being African-American talent, I'd never seen a Satyr, you know what I mean? The fact that they looked at me for this role was really cool, because it was something different... something that I'd never seen somebody do. So I pieced it together like, this guy is something cool. It just all came together when I read it. I could just relate to the way he talked. It just made sense."

It's hard for him to pick just one scene as a favorite from "Sea of Monsters." "I really love the 3-D action stuff," he gushes. "Every movie what happens is... there's a quest and we have a big action scene at the end. I always love that action scene! It's just fun to watch 'cause it's like the last moments of what we gotta do to get everything done!"

His most memorable day of filming just might have been his most dangerous. "I think when we were in the mud... and we had to get rid of those alligators and stuff. I was like, 'Oh my God!' They've got alligators in it! There were alligators in the muck and the mud! They had these guys that hunted them down and were throwing them out of the thing... it was just crazy!"

Dodging alligators might also be a great way to bond as the cast spent a lot of time together on and off the set. "Honestly, read, talk about life, see where everyone was at because this is our second movie, everyone's kind of a family," Brandon says about what the cast does in their downtime. "It was more just like a family. We went out to eat. It's fun."

Is it harder for Brandon to appear in a movie so heavy on special effects versus one that doesn't have to add anything in later? Nope! "To me, it's not challenging too much anymore because if you cannot have an imagination as an actor when you're reading it, you shouldn't be there. It was fun! It was challenging, but not so challenging where it was unbearable because it was more fun to use your imagination as an acting muscle."

When not acting, the versatile performer can be found exercising other muscles as well. "I work out a lot. I play basketball. I've been golfing lately, I golf a little bit. When I'm not acting, I'm on stage doing stand-up, talking about the world. I'm always doing both."

He also makes sure that he pencils in time to give back. "I've got this one [charity] that I'm doing in Detroit. We're giving out clothes to kids on December 23. We're having a dinner at my house in Detroit for inner-city kids. We're giving out coats. The Mayor's going to be there. It's going to be real fun!"

Brandon also wants to encourage teens out there to follow their dreams the right way. "Never give up! Always write! Always read! Keep your mind going. Keep your imagination flowing. You can do anything you put your mind to... ANYTHING! Stay focused and do it! And prepare! Lots of kids don't prepare. Prepare for whatever your dream is! You can make it happen!"

Be sure to watch Brandon and his fellow cast-mates in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, available now on DVD and Blu-ray. Keep an eye on this rising talent both on the big screen and on-stage with his stand-up comedy. He's born to entertain and he's proving it!
