Spencer Lee's Song "Still I Fly" Lifts "Planes Fire and Rescue" Even Higher!

By: Susan J. Yeager

Singer/songwriter Spencer Lee was thrilled to be part of the writing team that was approached to submit song ideas for Disney's "Planes Fire and Rescue." He had no idea that executives would love his demo so much that they would ask to keep his voice as the lead vocals. After years of hard work, Spencer's voice and music became a wonderful addition to another great Disney animated movie. In a way, this is only the beginning for this talented performer.

Hollywood is a long way from the farm fields of Kansas where the musician got his start. "I didn't have much to do out there so I started singing for the cows in my backyard. They loved it," he laughs. "Growing up in Kansas, there were only a limited amount of things that I could go associate myself with music," he continues about how he got started on this career path. "There were, fortunately enough, a couple of low-key competitions at the Memorial Halls and stuff like that around the four states area. I went out and just competed as much as I could, trying to gain as many first place trophies as I could. After that, I had a lot of fun doing it and I was like, 'What do I do next?' Now I'm here in Los Angeles, so I guess I made the right move."

Originally, Spencer has only set his sights on singing. As for songwriting, "That started the minute I kind of stepped foot in Los Angeles at 17. I kind of just got thrown into it. I was asked if I wanted to give songwriting a shot. I had an opportunity to write for a television show or something like that. I was pretty surprised, because the first time I tried out, getting placement, I actually nailed it! So I kept going with it and I'm not going to look back!"

Now at 22, the singer/songwriter is thrilled to be featured in Disney's "Planes Fire and Rescue" which lands in theaters on July 18. "At the time, I was in my own little writing team, and they had had some connections and the opportunities were thrown their way and I was asked if I wanted to be on board and I said 'Absolutely!' he says of how the collaboration with Disney came about. "So we got to throw out a couple of submissions here and there and got my name out there with that, so that was really cool!"

Then, another exciting invitation came his way. "At the time, I was merely writing a song for someone else [to sing]. I had no idea that I was even going to be the front man for this song. I just knew that they needed an awesome rock/ballad type thing. We did the best we could. I put the vocal on it. The next thing you know, I'm featured in the movie! It's kind of a very lucky, very cool thing and I'm so happy to be a part of it."

When we spoke to Spencer he had just seen the movie. "I actually just watched the movie, literally ten minutes ago," he says excitedly. "It was absolutely incredible! It was great!"

And what's it like to hear your song in the middle of a motion picture on the big screen? "It was pretty cool. I kind of patted myself on the back there."

Take a listen to the song here:

Planes Fire and Rescue isn't the first Disney animated film to leave a lasting impression on Spencer. "Oliver and Company, all the music, all the score was done by Billy Joel, that's an inspiration of mine," he confesses. "That's one of my favorites of all time. That's going in the vault!"

Now that PFAR is in theaters, what's next for the music maker? "I am a hundred percent, full force, nailing it on the head with my music. This train ain't stopping. We've got a couple of great tunes that I am ready to release at any given moment. Might even release something right now! I don't know! I've got a few song that I am ready to do and perform, and it's a lot different than what you are hearing in the movie so I am kind of excited to really debut myself as an artist and show everyone what I am here to do!"

And where can you find more about Spencer and his music? "All the fans can check me out on http://www.TheBrainMusic.com. Me and my partner Freddy Wexler have been really working hard, really putting all the gears into place for this music of mine.

Last but not least, what advice does Spencer have for aspiring musicians out there? "Pick a lane, pick a style and be the best you can be at it. Stay true. Don't let outside opinions mold you. Do what you want to do from the heart up and that's it. You're going to find yourself in some great positions if you surround yourself with great people and just have fun doing what you're doing."

Check out Spencer's song "Still I Fly" on the soundtrack to Disney's Planes Fire and Rescue. The inspirational song is likely to become an anthem for people everywhere who are waiting for their dreams to take flight!
