Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Arrives on Blu-ray and DVD!

Maze Runner: Scorch Trials

Navigating Turning Books In to Movies, "The Maze Runner" Author, James Dashner, Is Finding His Way!

By: Danae Samms

"The Maze Runner" fans can get excited again as "The Scorch Trials" comes to DVD and Blu-ray this Christmas season. Special features include two hours of bonus material and interviews.

Author of "The Maze Runner" and "The Scorch Trials," James Dashner, is excited for the release, and looks forward to the fan's feedback.

"I'm excited for people who, for one reason or another didn't make it out to the theater, finally get to see the movie," Dashner said. "In a lot of ways for some people it's the first time they'll be seeing it so that's exciting. Even for those who did see it in the theater it's always fun to see it in a more intimate, relaxed setting at home."

Dashner enjoys seeing his work put into film. Both of the works pleased him, and he liked watching the whole piece come together.

"I think what stands out in my mind are the visuals of the actual scorch," Dashner said. "There are some beautiful shots when the sun is setting or the sun is beating down from the sky. There's one scene where you can see their silhouettes on the ridge of a dune. Those images have been in my head for so long. I love those kinds of shots. The one scene I was really excited about was Thomas and Brenda down in the tunnels being chased by cranks, which many people say is the scariest scene in the book series. I'd say it's the scariest scene so far in the movies. That was fun to see come to life."

Dashner has spent most of his life wanting to be a writer. In college, he began to get serious when he published his first novel. Since then he has published several series, and has a new book in the Morality Doctrine series "The Game of Lives."

"The fact I can do this for a living makes me so happy, the fact that I can do a hobby for my job, when it's something I love," Dashner explained. "Just to see it grow and see the book come out in 44 languages, and the movies doing well all over the world. You have a small part in entertaining people, helping them escape the normal drudgeries of life. Perhaps even get inspired by these characters, it's very rewarding and thrilling. It's something more awesome than I ever even imagined."

The Morality Doctrine series is a little different from The Maze Runner. But, Dashner assured fans if they liked The Maze Runner series, they would enjoy Morality Doctrine.

"This new series is inspired by "The Matrix" and the movie "Inception,"" Dashner said. "It's very virtual reality and artificial intelligence, kind of mind trippy stuff that I'm proud of. I've worked hard to craft it with a lot of twists and turns. I think anyone who likes maze runner will really get into it."

In the different series he has created, Dashner has taken his readers to a lot of different times and places. Each series has an entire world of happenings different from the others. When it comes to building them, Dashner has no trouble keeping each story's facts separated.

"I do take notes, but most of it's just in my head. For some reason I'm able to keep them separate. I try to make them different from each other so that I'm not just writing the same thing over and over. I have a lot more stuff up my sleeve; we'll see how it goes."

In the newest Mortality Doctrine installment, Dashner left an Easter egg to reference The Maze Runner. He explained that readers should keep an eye out for similar looks in the future. He also said that Mortality Doctrine might be getting a screen adaptation someday.

"I think they would make great films," Dashner said. "That's kind of how I visualized them while I was writing. We have taken some steps. Fingers crossed."

Dashner's books have been popular in the young adult genre. He was encouraging to young people interested in writing or becoming authors, and explained that they should take every opportunity to write.

"Write every day if possible, because writing, just the act of it, makes you better. Seek out local writer's conferences. Every city has them, every state has them. There are various organizations that have these conferences where they teach classes and they have these agents and editors. They are usually pretty inexpensive. Those are just invaluable. Almost every step I've took on my road to success I can trace back in some way or another to some Writer's Conference."
