Brad Paisley Helps West Virginia Audience Beat A Long Winter!

By: Susan J. Yeager

It's been a while since country music singer, Brad Paisley, played Charleston, West Virginia, but you know what they say about good things coming to those who wait. Thousands of people streamed in to the Charleston Civic Center in hopes of being entertained by their fellow West Virginian and forgetting about the bad weather, and a recent water crisis that have been plaguing the state lately. Brad and his fellow musicians did not disappoint. For over three hours, the audience was treated to great music and a much needed break from reality.

Originally, titled the "Beat This Summer Tour," (based on Brad's previous single of the same name), Paisley and company added another round of dates and changed the name to the "Beat This Winter" tour. It seemed a fitting title seeing how so many states have been battling unusually harsh weather lately. Charleston was the official last stop of the tour which lent a "last day of school" vibe to the musicians and crew.

Danielle Bradbery is signed to Big Machine Records but first came to a lot of people's attention via the television show "The Voice." Having been chosen to be on "Team Blake," coach, Blake Shelton, steered Danielle to a season four win at only 16 years of age. A year later, the talented singer is experiencing her first big tour as opening act for Brad.

)

The Texas native used her 25-minute set to showcase songs from her self-titled, debut album, like her opening number, "Talk About Love." Other tracks that made the set list included her first single "The Heart of Dixie," and her latest single "Wild Boy." She also performed "A Little Bit Stronger," a song that helped propel her to her "The Voice" win. Danielle certainly has the pipes to leave her mark on country music. We look forward to watching her grow as a performer. She doesn't have much of a break from touring as she heads out with Hunter Hayes on the "We're Not Invisible" tour mid-March.

Nobody minded waiting for the stage to be reset during acts because Dee Jay Silver was on hand to spin tunes and keep the crowd soaking up the party atmosphere. Country hits likes "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" and Rock staples like "Walk This Way," kept the audience on their feet and dancing during the downtime.

Chris Young loves his job and the audience could tell! The singer barreled on to the stage with a rockin' version of his infectious hit "A.M." (Also the title of his latest album). If that wasn't enough to get everyone's attention, his second song was the smash hit "Getting You Home (The Black Dress Song), followed by the mid-tempo "Voices." The truth is... he had everybody at "A.M."

He easily chatted with the audience between songs, pointing out how often he played West Virginia. He followed that by saying that he considered himself an honorary "Mountaineer." We'll take ya Chris! Other songs performed off the latest album included "Lonely Eyes," "Nothing Left But The Cooler," his latest single "Who I Am With You," and the one that should have everyone out of their seats and dancing... "Aw Naw" (and it did!)

)

Fans also enjoyed hearing Chris' hit "Tomorrow," and a cover of the ZZ Top hit, "Sharp Dressed Man." Overall, everyone had a great time during Chris' 45 minute set. He is welcome here anytime.

There are some people we praise for having a very simple set-up, nothing flashy, just a guitar and some music. That is not how it goes down during a Brad Paisley concert. It is almost just as much a visual show as it is audio, which makes it twice the fun. Brad started his set with "Southern Comfort Zone," before slinging right into "Mud on The Tires." He followed those with his latest single "Mona Lisa."

Talk about working the stage! Brad made sure to get as close as possible to every ticket holder at some point during the show. If he wasn't in your direct line of a vision, it was a good time to check out the huge video screen that made up the back of his stage. There was always something funny or poignant to see on the big screen.

From his latest album "Wheelhouse," Brad showcased "Outstanding in Our Field (Chris returned to the stage to help out on)," and "Beat the This Summer." The latter came during an acoustic portion of the 100 minute set that also included "Waitin' on A Women," "I'm Still A Guy" and of course, "Country Roads." Most people sing it when they play Charleston, but it just seems to mean more coming from a native.

)

Brad joked with the crowd that you had to know he was from Wild, Wonderful, West Virginia because anything of his that is stationary for more than 15 minutes, his Dad throws a WV sticker on it. "One of the nicest things I ever did was buy my Dad a Corvette," he explained. "Before it even left the driveway, he had a West Virginia bumper sticker on it," he joked. "Nothing says redneck like a bumper sticker on a Corvette!"

Other songs to make the set list included "This is Country Music," "Old Alabama," "American Saturday Night," "I'm Gonna Miss Her," "Hot for Teacher" and "Celebrity" Carrie Underwood appeared via video to sing her part of the duet "Remind Me." The video was so lifelike; fans were rushing the stage to try to get a picture.

All too soon, it was time for Brad's last number, "Water." Given that the city had just come through a period where the water had been contaminated and unable to be used for drinking, washing or bathing, one might be nervous that your whole audience might just cringe. However, the crowd was here to forget their troubles so everyone just sang a long instead.

No one was leaving without an encore and thankfully, Brad had one planned. Chris, Danielle, their band members and some of the crew, joined Brad onstage for a rousing rendition of "Alcohol." It was the perfect ending to the perfect party.

Brad and company pack a whole lot of music in to a three and 1/2 hour show and during times when money is tight, ticket buyers sure appreciate getting so much for their money.
