Life is an adventure for Maya, the clever and resourceful blonde-bobbed monkey in "Monkey Kingdom," Disneynature's new feature film set among ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia. Maya's world is forever changed when she welcomes her son, Kip, into her complicated extended family. Like all families, Maya's has more than its share of colorful personalities-and she's determined to give her son a leg up in the world. When their longtime home at Castle Rock is taken over by powerful neighboring monkeys, Maya's whole family retreats, and she uses her street smarts and ingenuity to uncover untapped resources amidst strange new creatures and unsettling surroundings. Ultimately, they will all have to work together to reclaim Castle Rock, where Maya can hopefully realize her dreams for her son's future.

Featuring a rich variety of characters, including a mischievous mongoose, simple-minded langur monkeys, predatory leopards and monitor lizards, "Monkey Kingdom" is narrated by Tina Fey ("30 Rock"), directed by Mark Linfield ("Chimpanzee," "Earth") and co-directed by Alastair Fothergill ("Chimpanzee," "Bears"). With music from award-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams ("The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," "Shrek" movies), Disneynature's eighth True Life Adventure-the follow-up to 2014's "Bears"-swings into theaters April 17, 2015.

Our Review

Disneynature's "Monkey Kingdom" is a Real Life Fairy-tale!

by: Liz Smith

Disneynature’s new feature film, “Monkey Kingdom,” is set in the beautiful backdrop of an ancient ruin called “Castle Rock,” in South Asia. The film, like other Disney fairytales, is a remarkable “Come up” story about how through hard work and persistence, you can rise to the top. This one is true, however, and stars a troop of lovable monkeys.

The leading lady in this film, Maya, is a Blonde-Bobbed monkey on the lowest level possible in the tribe, scrounging for scraps to stay alive. When a new, very handsome Kumar comes to the tribe, she instantly connects with him, forming quite the romance. But a jealous Raja doesn’t approve, and ultimately throws him out.

Maya is about to give birth to a baby boy named Kip, and must endure much more hardship before things begin to look up. When their tribe is faced with a challenging situation, she knows just what to do. Maya’s tribe flees Castle Rock after being attacked by a rival tribe. The city is very unfamiliar to the tribe, and the nobility are completely overwhelmed by the situation, giving the lower class monkeys a chance to shine.

Maya’s partner Kumar steps up to be the leader, raising Maya’s social status by association. She is now at the top of the ladder! Kumar organizes a plan to take back Castle Rock, and for the first time, Maya has the security she could only dream of before, in which to raise her son.

“Monkey Kingdom” features many other engaging characters as well, including a family of bears, natural predators such as the leopard, and the very dangerous monitor lizards. The movie, which is fun and educational for the whole family, is narrated by the always entertaining, Tina Fey (30 Rock), and directed by Mark Linfield (Chimpanzee & Earth) and co-directed by Alastair Fothergill (Chimpanzee & Bears). It also features music from award-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams (The Chronicles of Narnia & Shrek).

One of the truly spectacular things about “Monkey Kingdom”, is the use of the latest camera technology during the filming process. It will absolutely blow you away! You are completely immersed in the culture and world of these monkeys, with no barriers. With all the cinematic feature shots, it’s hard to believe this is a nature movie!

Tina Fey does a great job of narrating the movie, but you almost forget that she’s even there because you get so caught up in the story. Disney has absolutely done it again, bringing their magic to the nature documentary film category. “Monkey Kingdom” is absolutely a delight to watch, and very engaging.

This is Disneynature’s eighth “True Life Adventure,” feature film. “Monkey Kingdom” swings into theaters April 17, 2015.
